TABLE OF CHEMICAL RESISTANCE [ PVC-U ]
The resistance of plastics pipe materials to a wide range of chemicals is listed in the following tables. The chemical names used in the tables are, wherever possible in accordance with the recommendations contained in BS 2474.
Abbreviations used in the tables as follows :
S - SATISFACTORY
U - UNSATISFACTORY
So rated because of decomposition, solution, swelling, lose of ductility and
others of the sample tested.
D - SOME ATTACK or ABSORPTION
The materials may be considered for use when alternative materials are unsatisfactory and where limited life is acceptable. When plastics are to be used with such chemicals, full-scale trials under realistic conditions are particularly necessary.
E - ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS CRACKING HAZARD
Polyethylenes are subject to this phenomenon if used with certain chemicals, which although chemically inactive produce stress cracks.
PREDICTED RESULTS
In order to cover a wide range of named chemicals as possible, the resistance of plastics to some chemicals has been predicted from its resistance to other chemicals which have similar composition.
